Homebrewed: A Musical Quest, is an independent musical film co-directed by Hannah Z. Morley, co-written by Morley and Delenn Jadzia, and co-produced by Morley, Jadzia, and Preston Towers. Now in post-production, Homebrewed features lesbian, bisexual, asexual, and nonbinary characters who use tabletop gaming as a way to work through their struggles of self-identity. With an original story and eight original songs, Homebrewed’s message is that identities are always evolving. Coming-out is a lifelong process, and after Homebrewed’s characters learn to accept their emotional uncertainties they feel safer exploring who they are and trusting in one another.
Through practical experience, I learned how to work in small groups to implement creative solutions before hard deadlines: such as changing the script on a filming day to match outside conditions and the necessity of clear oral communication. Now in post-production, creating this film taught me how to grow with projects as they develop from the ground up and why, as a LGBTQ+ person, the importance of LGBTQ+ stories.
This film was put together with donations from the University of California, Santa Barbara’s Raab Writing Fellowship, its Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities Grant (U.R.CA.), and with in-kind sponsorships from Aradani Costumes, Corset Story, Elderwood Academy, Five Wit Wigs, Orchard Corset, and Poly-Hero Dice.
